86-year-old Richard: Weight Lifting Is the Magic Potion for a Strong Body and Mind

86-year-old Richard: Weight Lifting Is the Magic Potion for a Strong Body and Mind

With over 50 years of training, a past filled with football, skiing, and even an Ironman finish, Richard proves that age is just a number. His secret? Keep reading!

Can you share your fitness journey?

I have been working out for the last 50 years!

Previous to that, I played several sports that required me to be in good shape. Just to give you some idea of what sports I’m talking about:

I played both football and basketball in high school. Football in college. I snow and water ski. Play tennis and golf. At one time I was 2nd in the world in indoor rowing! Completed the Ironman triathlon in Hawaii...

Fitness has always been a central part of my life.
Even now, working out alongside people half my age proves that I still have plenty of muscle, even at 86!

What is your daily/weekly fitness plan?

I workout 5 to 6 days a week. My goal at this time is to maintain both my physical and mental fitness. I find weight lifting is the magic potion, that helps in both areas.

Why you decide to build up a home gym?

I live in a floating home in Washington, with a river running by my house.
I decided that I would rather look at nature, than four walls, and people using incorrect lifting methods! Plus it allows me to lift whenever the mood strikes me! Oh and I have complete control over the music i listen as well as the volume!

What GMWD fitness products do you have?

I currently own 5 of your machines. The Rowing Machine, Bench Press, Isolated Leg Extension, Peck Deck and Rear Delt Machine, Seated Dip Machine.

How is your user experience? What is your favorite one?

I am in awe of the quality of your equipment! I can’t imagine buying any machine but yours to equip my home gym!
Your machines in my opinion are setting the standard for home gym equipment, both in quality and price.
If I have to pick a favorite, it would be the bench press, I have never been able to work that part of my body effectively due to my long arms.
With your machine, for the first time since Ive been lifting, I look forward to chest day!

Any other you want to share with the old?

At 86, people often ask me, “What’s your secret?” My usual answer is “clean living,” which is partly true. But the real key to a long life is enjoying it! I’ve never been one to pass up a great experience.

That said, I’ve always balanced any excess partying with an extra-hard workout—I believe if you play, you must pay!

One of the biggest mistakes when starting a workout program is trying to keep up with the “Joneses.” Pushing too hard for too long will only burn you out.

If you don’t enjoy the journey, you’ll never reach the destination!

Level up your gym now!
