Joe Horton: Be Smart, Train Smart (advice for beginners)

“I do 3 Memorial stair climbs annually, 110 floors for the souls that lost their lives on 9/11.” His story shows that age is no barrier to fitness. Discover his advice, love for GMWD equipment, and commitment to excellence.

Can you tell us a little about your fitness journey?

Began my fitness journey at 14 years old, with my sights set to become a career firefighter.

Ran track and field in high school, played football, was always involved at trying to better myself. This kept me motivated. At 23 I began my firefighting career and worked 30 years for a Florida department retiring in 2017 as a Fire Lieutenant. In 2008 I started competing in the Firefighter Combat Challenge which prompted me to train harder utilizing many strength system programs for cardio, speed and peak performance.

Until today, at 61 years old, I still compete as a retired Firefighter.I also do 3 Memorial stair climbs annually, 110 floors for the souls that lost their lives on 9/11.

What is your daily/weekly fitness plan?

Currently a 6 day split in off season weight training, hit each body part 2 times weekly and utilize stair climbing and plyometrics as cardio training 3 days weekly. Sunday is an off day.

What made you choose the GMWD Seated Dip Machine over other options on the market?

I've always been a fan of machines. Your Seated Dip machine is very versatile, allows me a few variations for tricep and chest workouts.

I guess I really didn’t look into other companies. Being I bought from GMWD before, I knew I would be getting a quality, well built machine I could beat to death, and it wouldn't fail. I like the handle option for inner and outer press down movements, that attracted me and allows me to get the full potential out of each exercise. I haven't used the attached curl and chain portion yet, but that is another cool gadget built into this machine.

What other GMWD fitness products do you own?

I currently have the leg/hack press, Seated leg extension and Seated Dip machines- all in red and black, my favorite colors, just my old fire truck!

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in their fitness journey?

If you're just starting out, there are many resources to help you achieve the body you are looking to build. Be consistent in your training using multiple training systems to help work cardio, build endurance, and build strength.

Stay motivated and make goals each time you train. It keeps things interesting, and you won't get bored. Eat the right mix of proteins/carbs/fats to keep your heart healthy, keeping the empty calorie foods to a minimum. Read up on healthy supplementation before buying and choose what is right for your programs.

Don't give up; you'll increase longevity in your life with a mix of exercise programs. The sky is the limit!
